don't mind the explosions on my back deck

I bought one of those stretchy green hoses to water my upper deck flower garden. I drilled a hole in the side deck wall and ran it up the gutter so I could access the water spigot below the deck.

stretchy hose coiled on upper deck
Even though we've had a lot of rain I decided to add some water to the self watering planters yesterday. I went downstairs and turned the hose on. My contractor Neal was standing near his saw.

From the upper deck, Neal's saw
As I turned on the hose I heard a loud POP. Then water started spraying off the upper deck. I was under the deck so I was fine, but Neal was standing right in the line of water fire. We were both like "what the FUCK just happened?" I turned off the hose and went upstairs on the deck.

my fucking stretchy hose exploded

Somehow pressure, I guess, built up in the hose (hasn't been turned on for a while) and the top part blew off. Neal said "I think those fucking things are guaranteed for life. You should get your fucking money back!"

Haha. My dad suggested that I get a different type of hose.

last home improvement project started!

Upstairs bathroom was demolished yesterday. And my contractor discovered that my water pipe, which is right against a brick wall, was "insulated" with newspaper. Shockingly it never froze.

This is what the downstairs shelves used to look like. Drywall and board shelves. Ghetto.

The new shelves in progress. There will be floating shelves and cabinets (granite covering the top of the cabinets.

most ridiculous dog in the world

One of the dogs I'm watching is a chihuahua / italian greyhound mix. He's 2 years old and the most ridiculous dog I've ever known. He spent 5 minutes chasing an ant around on the patio trying to eat it (he was never quite able to catch it).

Some pictures...

"Maybe you should let me drive." He doesn't understand that you have to drive aggressively in city traffic.

I yelled at him for jumping up on the bed and he decided to hide his head under the bed for 10 minutes.

I guess he's working on his tan.

He has a toy bone that he randomly drops all over the house so I took it from him. He wasn't happy and when I gave it back he sat on his dog bed glaring at me and clutching the bone in his teeth. Yeah, I was intimidated.

dog sitter goes crazy

A friend of mine asked me to house sit and watch his dogs while he was at Sturgis this past weekend. He also presented me with a cleaning challenge (if there's one thing I'm great at it's cleaning). His hot tub cover leaked while the hot tub was drained and it got all ick inside. Friends of his will be in town this coming weekend and he wanted to fill it so they can hang out in it at night. Full disclosure, I use the hot tub for my knee so it's in my best interest for it to be clean.

So I did some research, bought a special sponge, and then, on Friday, after my friend had left I looked at the hot tub.

oy vey!
I got to work and had it clean in no time.
cleanest hot tub EVER
Then, because I can't help myself, I cleaned his house. Not that it was dirty. But I ended up vacuuming all the window sills, cleaning the windows, wiping base boards, and doing all the stuff normal people don't do.

By then it was Saturday around noon and because one of his dogs is old she can't be left for long periods of time, and I thought...well...since I'm here...

And I cleaned his garage.

you could eat off the floor
At that point I think my asperger's kicked in over drive. I installed the magic mesh door he bought a year ago but hadn't had a chance to install. I patched up nail holes in the bathroom walls and repainted it. I even reorganized his downstairs closet.
before

after...yeah, I am awesome
Today I took some stone remnants from his front yard and built a path around the hot tub so no one has to step on gravel when opening it.

I really don't know what's wrong with me. But I think it explains why people really like to have me as a friend. Though, my friend is coming home from sturgis early. Maybe he's afraid of what I'll do next...

robots ARE safe drivers

This weekend the fun hog and I went to an area called coffee pot to do some hiking and biking. Coffee pot is on a mesa and there's a steep scary windy 16 mile dirt road you have to drive to get there. The road has a lot of hairpin turns, areas so narrow two cars can't pass each other, and huge drop offs (basically, you don't want to run off the road).

Saturday we did the devil's causeway (the 10 mile loop, not the wimpy 6 miler) and literally got to the car right as a torrential downpour started.

on the narrow section of the devil's causeway
I didn't think much about the rain until Sunday afternoon when we attempted to drive down coffee pot road so we could go to the glenwood springs hot springs. It had rained steadily from around 4 pm saturday until around 1 pm on sunday. The dirt road was a fucking mess. There was thick mud everywhere and it was almost impossible to control the truck. Add to that other cars coming up the road. Scary.

So FH decided, about halfway down the road, that I should take a turn driving. I'd never driven his truck before so that made things even more interesting. I started on a straight section of the road and things were going okay. Then I drove around a hairpin turn and quickly realized the truck was going to go where it wanted in spite of me trying to steer. That mud was harder to drive in than snow or ice.

I sort of got control of the truck and was starting to relax when suddenly, around a turn in front of me, we saw a guy in a truck with a horse trailer coming towards us. There was a pull out on the turn that he could have used to let me pass but FH thinks he was afraid to stop in the mud. The truck was coming towards us at a very narrow section of the road. I tried to brake and coax the truck over to the side so the guy could pass but the truck neither slowed nor went in the direction I was steering. I felt the panic rise at the thought I was going to total FH's truck less than 60 seconds after I had started driving it.

I said "I have no control over the truck. The truck is not stopping." I kept feathering the brakes and trying to steer. I literally got the truck over and stopped about 2 feet away from the truck coming towards us.

I'm about to total your $60,000 truck
I got the truck back on the road after the other truck passed us. My hands were literally shaking. FH said "good job driving" and I was like "are you kidding???? I almost just wrecked your truck!" I showed him how my hands were shaking and he started making fun of me saying I had said "the truck is not stopping" in such a robotic voice that he didn't even realize I was scared. Then he said "well, if you had driven the truck off the cliff I would have died but they would have just had to replace your circuits".

Ha. Ha. Ha.

The rest of the story is that we decided to stay until Monday morning because we didn't want to risk hauling the toy hauler down that shit road for fear it would jack knife or possibly slide off the cliff and pull the truck with it. We figured there was no way it would keep raining after the skies cleared on Sunday. After all, we're having a drought.

Except that around 4 pm on Sunday it did start raining again, and rained consistently through the night. I wondered if I was going to have to call into work and if we'd be stuck until Tuesday. Luckily it stopped raining around 830 Monday morning and by 11 am we were able to get down coffee pot road. Not saying it was easy but FH is a great driver.

Moral of the story: my family brings torrential downpours every place we go, even the middle east.

my tile adventure rivals Jason's Deli

On Saturday all my friends had something to do, and I had been drinking wine the night before with my friend Camile and decided maybe I didn't want to get up in 4 hours and do Long's Peak, so I decided to finish up the rest of my to do list in preparation for my upstairs bathroom remodel which will hopefully start mid-August.

My contractor Neal suggested that I look at a tile store (that I'm sure would have blown my budget) that he uses frequently. I also was supposed to pick out some baseboard at a lumber yard. The advantage to shopping where Neal suggests is that he picks the shit up so I don't have to haul it in my car.

I left for the lumber yard only to discover, after sitting for almost a half hour in traffic, that it was closed. What, no one buys lumber on Saturday??? I carried on down the same street (Santa Fe) because the tile place was only a mile from the lumber place.

I sat in traffic for about 45 minutes, barely moving. I was like what the fucking fuck is going on around here? I found out when I got to the Alameda intersection. Fucking Santa Fe was closed for construction.

On a mission, I decided to take some back roads (really having not even the faintest clue as to where I was going) and finally managed to get back on to Santa Fe. The tile store was so close I could smell the grout. And Santa Fe was CLOSED about a quarter of a mile from the tile store.

I looked around for a place to park Jake figuring I'd walk to the tile store (in 100 degree heat no less, that's how badly I wanted to get the tile picked and off my to do list). No dice. I went home, had a glass of wine, whined to my mom, looked up another tile place, and headed out again.

The place I went to is called "world of tile" although, compared to other tile places I visited during my kitchen remodel, they didn't have THAT many tiles. No one was shopping there for tiles so a dude named Michael was able to immediately assist me. I found what I wanted in 2 minutes. Shockingly, it was also $12 under budget (that NEVER happens to me). So I was like "Michael, this is all so great, but I should warn you, everything I picked out for my kitchen was out of stock or discontinued." He was like "well, at world of tile, we have EVERYTHING in stock."

A couple of clicks later on the computer and he admitted "um, we're going to have to order that."

Meh.

Supposedly it will come in today. Stay tuned for pictures. Michael was like "oh, what a beautiful room!" when I showed him the upstairs bathroom pics and I was like "um, it hasn't been redone yet." Hopefully he was kissing my ass and doesn't have super bad taste because I took his recommendation.

I miss Christine.

things I don't need to see (don't read if you're eating)

Yesterday evening the fun hog and I went for a bike ride and then decided to check out the new patio at Illegal Pete's on Broadway.

We went out to the patio and ordered beers (happy hour, $2.50). Then the fun hog graciously offered to get us some food. While we had been drinking our beer I noticed a youngish (20s) blond haired kid in normal looking clothes who walked onto the patio with a huge can of budweiser. He sat at a table in the middle of the patio. Seemed normal so I didn't pay any more attention to him....

Until I heard this terrible noise. It sounded like someone trying to fill a bathtub. I looked behind me and the blond kid had his head down on the table and was puking, not violently, just kind of...like the puke was rolling out of his mouth like a waterfall.

I walked up to the bar and tapped the bartender on the arm. "There's a kid puking over there" I said, pointing at the kid. "Oh, I just clocked out" she said. Three other people who were sitting on the patio started complaining (kid was still puking). A guy who worked there came out, took a look at the kid, went back inside, and busied himself at the cash register.

I went back up to the bar and was like "you HAVE to do something". Families were coming in and the kids were running by puke boy. Plus, I was not really excited about eating a burrito while someone puked behind me. The bartender made a phone call and around that time FH came out with the food.

I said "Let's face the other way and don't look behind you." He was like "You mean at the guy covered in puke?" Um, yeah. At some point the kid was removed and the puke was washed away. Overall I think the incident was handled badly by the staff. It took forever for them to respond and do anything. The off duty bartender said "oh, he was probably just drinking and had too much." The on duty bartender said "he was probably out with friends".

But if that were the case where were the friends? If he was super drunk why did he sit in the middle of the patio instead of at the edge where he would be less obvious? The off duty bartender said "I don't recognize him and I've been on duty all day." No shit. He wasn't even drinking a beer they served.

Granted I'm not great at understanding people but to me it seemed like a cry for help. This kid walks into a restaurant with alcohol and is so inebriated he's puking all over himself. Except for the bartender going over to him no one tried to help him.

I postulated to the fun hog that he was depressed about something, obviously feeling alone, and went to the restaurant to get some attention, even if negative. I hope he was taken to a hospital if that was the case and that he got help, or is getting help. The fun hog said "you just made up a whole story about this kid's life and maybe he was out with friends, had too much to drink, wanted to get some food, but didn't quite make it." Maybe that's the case.

I did nothing to help him. I don't know if I should feel bad about that.

it turns out it wasn't about farts

On the 4th of July a friend of mine, who (obviously) has kids sent me an email and all it contained was this:

http://m.youtube.com/#/watch?v=W_WtTAQf-9Y&desktop_uri=%2Fwatch%3Fv%3DW_WtTAQf-9Y

So I watched the link, which is for a cartoon about
these things called octonauts that go around exploring
shit under the ocean.

I sent the following response, a commentary as I watched the cartoon:

Part of me has a hard time getting past the fact that these dudes look like fucked up Japanese sex toys.

Have to admit I'm totally trashed. 4th of July, lots of fireworks.

How weird that they make the what ever whale things speak with a texan accent. People always fucking copy me and end up famous*.

Is that a fucking rabbit in an air breather? I like the dude with the eye patch and the russian narwhale dudes. Seven minutes in. Someone better fart and make me laugh.

Cool. There's an autistic dude, wonder if he's an aspie...

K, there's weird vegetables talking and a dude that looks like an amputee. Or maybe I'm drunker than I thought.

Haha, pseudo orcas to save the day. Why are those fucking vegetables sitting on top of him? Oh, they're bow head whales, those pseudo orcas. What ever. They look like orcas. I kind of like orcas even though they kill great whites.

Probably not sober enough to email. Or watch cartoons. So please ignore this. There was some factual truth in the cookie cutter shark cartoon. Will have to investigate this thing about narwhales or how ever the fuck you spell (dear yahoo, stop underlining my shit in red when it's mis-spelled because it's fucking annoying - is this a feature I turned on? fuck me) it getting trapped in ice later. Too drunk to sit upright on my exercise ball so it's hard to type and do a google search. Thanks for sharing.

Happy fucking 4th of July! Think I need another drink. Cheers and gunpowder!

Aforementioned friend never responded to my email, so I thought, hm, maybe don't email that friend while drunk anymore. Then today I got this:

I wouldn't know what a fucked up Japanese sex toy looked like but am impressed you do. I sent it to you because of the whales talking Texan, thought you might enjoy.

Hope you blew some shit up for the 4th!

For the record, I know what the toys look like because I saw them in a movie. I like subtitles because it's like reading a book but with pictures. And someone did fart in the cartoon, though it was toward the end.

I guess I should stop assuming everyone is as obsessed with farts as I am.

Though, haha, forgot to mention in my post about my aunt and uncle, that at one point at dinner I said "this isn't like a REAL family dinner because no one has mentioned farts or poop". Minutes later their neighbor sent an email of their dog pooping in his (the neighbor's) yard and then we started talking about farts. It was nice for things to be normal.

*in my children's book the great white sharks, aka the whitey biteys, speak with a texan accent

I'm not the only one who thinks my swamp cooler is an asshole

A guy named Bill showed up first thing Thursday morning to fix my swamp cooler since everything I had tried had failed and my only option was to start drilling holes, which I didn't feel comfortable doing.

It turns out the reason the pulley kept loosening and falling off is because the set screw is supposed to screw into a little piece of metal called the key that goes under the set screw.
My key had somehow gone missing. No idea what happened to it. And unfortunately it's not something you can go out and buy. Bill made a key out of some metal bits he had in his truck. I don't think he realized that his voice carried through the vent that goes from the swamp cooler into my house because he was cursing at my swamp cooler and he seemed like the kind of guy who wouldn't curse if he thought someone would hear him. He called my swamp cooler a "fucking thing!" and "piece of shit". I also heard him pounding it with his wrench.

It works now.

The suck part is the pillow bearing (that round metal thing behind the pulley) is shot to shit and the rod the pulley is mounted on is warped from when the pulley came loose and those two things can't be fixed.

Bottom line, I have to get a new swamp cooler next year. Oh well. I learned a lot.

the jason's deli adventure

My Aunt Sarah and Uncle David arrived in Denver Friday night. My aunt was recovering from altitude sickness. We walked to wahoo's in the rain. So much for the drought. As soon as they showed up so did the rain.

Which leads me to the adventure...Saturday we went to Roxborough and did a hike.

On the way home we were talking about what to do for dinner. Initially we were thinking to walk somewhere. But then we decided to go to jason's deli because my uncle wanted a salad, it has a salad bar, and I'd never been there. I found the closest jason's deli, which was on union street in Lakewood, and got directions.

As we had been hiking a storm was moving in. As the afternoon wore on the sky got darker and darker. By the time we were ready to go to dinner a torrential downpour had started as well as a pretty spectacular display of lightning.

No worries, I thought, running to the car. I can drive in this easily. But as we drove down my street we saw manhole covers that had popped off. Water was bursting out of them like a street water feature or something.

I got on the highway and water from other cars was splashing on my windshield, momentarily blinding me. And traffic was terrible. I turned off on 6th Avenue and there was standing water everywhere. Cop cars were blocking some of the exit ramps because they were flooded. My aunt saw a car submerged in the water off one of the exit ramps. I started thinking maybe going out in the storm was a bad idea.

We finally got to our exit (I was looking at east bound 6th avenue, which had stopped traffic, thinking "that's going to suck on the way home"). Feeling relieved I told my aunt and uncle "so it's only two blocks from here!"

EXCEPT the fucking street was barricaded by cop cars. All traffic was being routed down a side street. Since Lakewood is a suburb I never go there and had no idea where we were going. Hoping the designers of Lakewood might have at least made some of the streets on a grid, I started making a bunch of turns figuring we'd get to jason's deli from the other side of union. Meanwhile my uncle was putting the address in my gps.

We got to union street finally and that was when the gps came to life. We were driving past a gas station and the gps said "you have reached your destination!" But it was lying. I drove behind and around the gas station. No jason's deli. I drove around the other side of union street. No deli.

So I called them and asked where their location was in reference to the gas station. They were a block away. And I also asked if they had power because a lot of the buildings on union street didn't have power. They did so I got back on union street and drove a block.

There was a cop car blocking the road AGAIN and we couldn't see the deli. I pulled an illegal u-turn, drove down an alley behind a bunch of office buildings, drove through another parking lot and FINALLY there was the deli.

We parked catty corner to the deli and got out in the still driving rain. We crossed the street and arrived to some employees who were very happy to see us. It was virtually empty inside the deli. They seemed a little surprised, actually, that we had made it with the blocked roads.

As we sat down with our salads I watched the cop car drive away. Really? After everything we had been through and walking through the rain to get there NOW the cop car decides to leave????

The rain finally stopped, we finished our salads, and walked back to the car...EXCEPT that the sprinkler system around the sidewalk we had to use kicked on after the rain and was spraying water all over the sidewalk. My uncle and I chose to walk on the street but my aunt ran through the sprinklers with her umbrella.

Earlier in the day my uncle had asked why I didn't get a newspaper to find out about local news. I replied "local news is stupid". So we had to laugh when we got back to my car because farther away in the parking lot was a channel 9 news truck broadcasting.

Is a blocked road that exciting if you aren't trying to get to Jason's Deli????

my dad lectures me on swamp coolers

Today I was talking to my parents and my dad said he had checked out my blog yesterday regarding my fixed swamp cooler. He said he had a suggestion on why my swamp cooler was acting up. Since he's a world famous engineer I was all ears:

Me: So what do you think is the main problem?
Dad: Well, you called your swamp cooler an asshole.

That was unexpected.

Dad: Your swamp cooler is alone, up on the roof, in all the bad weather, and not only do you call it names but you also write blog posts making fun of it. Is that very nice?
Me: Um, no. But, uh, I lubricated the bearings.
Dad: Well, that's better than an apology.

This post may only be funny to people who know my dad. Apologies.

the intern, redux

In 2008, in the middle of dealing with an annoying dirt bag climber who was living in my house for free and a visit from my dad I got an email from my friend Gadget saying he offered my house to a woman in his church who was looking for a place for her son to stay. The son, Jonathan, had gotten a job as an intern with CNN to cover the democratic national convention.

So I did the best I could reorganizing my two bedroom house to support 3 guests. And I was a little worried when Jonathan showed up. He's super religious and I don't usually get along with those types of people. But in no time we were all on the back porch drinking, smoking, and eating buffalo burgers. I admit that during the time he stayed here I may have loosened his rule set a little.

I lent him my bike which he rode to the convention every day. At the end, to thank me, he took all the left over batteries for the cameras and shit and gave them to me. And his mom sent me a very generous gift certificate for REI.

As is typical, people show up in my life suddenly, disappear, and I figure I'll never hear from them again. And then I hear from them again...

This morning Jonathan called me. He and his wife are here in Denver celebrating their 2 year wedding anniversary (side note: I'm impressed by anyone who manages to keep a relationship going for that long). We texted back and forth on places to go and places to eat. I just got a text from him that they love the restaurant I suggested for their romantic anniversary dinner. Which is good because I'd never been there before (picture me in a "romantic" restaurant - even I can't do that and I'm fucking creative).

He said he wanted to come here for his anniversary because he had so much fun when he was here for the convention (besides drinking and talking late into the night we also had a farting contest and Jonathan accidentally knocked my work desk down a flight of stairs and one night all the interns, 21 year old guys, not sure how many of them there were, showed up at my house for dinner and didn't leave until 2 in the morning).

I figure some day Jonathan will be famous (he worked for Anderson Cooper at the DNC) and may be a potential source of free batteries for the rest of my life. Glad he made the trip...

I forget the legend of the croco-diamond

In February I started writing a prologue to a children's book I wrote called the colossal cringle crisp caper. I did that because I was advised by Jeff in my writer's group (of which I'm no longer a member) to do so.

I came up with an idea for a short croco-diamond story that would be the legend of why they are lucky (if the croco-diamond isn't lucky, so some "logical" people say, no one would put up with his shit...though I know a lot of people that put up with shit from other people so whatever). I then researched it to make sure the idea behind the legend I was writing would be scientifically accurate. I started writing the chapter and then, literally the next day, got side tracked.

Anyway, I just sat down minutes ago to finish writing the prologue and I can't fucking remember what my idea was. For fuck's sake. Maybe I should just start over...and yes, I did complete this book more than a year ago, and wrote a subsequent story about the croco-diamond for a friend's daughter, and still haven't done a fucking thing about getting it published. I did enter it into a contest but judging from the winners it was the wrong contest (a book about the "huggy momster" won - I almost fucking puked typing that).

Oh well. I'll think of something:

The Legend of the Croco-diamond

From The Legends of all the Creatures in all of The Worlds, by Baron Joseph von Noseworth-Socks and Dr. Mimsy A. Crumbles:

In the time of the time in question, which is much earlier than time is now, there existed a King Muckles-string who oversaw the kingdom of New Dunsley Clackyshire on the Sea (though in truth it was just close to the sea). And the King had a terrible problem.

There was a building central to the town where all the raincoats, back up raincoats, raincoats for future use, and previous raincoats which could no longer be worn were stored. It rains quite frequently in New Dunsley Clackyshire on the Sea. The building was called The Raincoat Keeper and, as it stored all the raincoats of all the times, it was stuffed full of raincoats. The building was a rather old, and, truth be told, wobbly.

In any case, one day the King had arranged a parade for all of the heavy things in the town. He was trying to promote fitness. So the townsfolk dutifully gathered up all of the heavy things and loaded them onto carts for the parade. There was a statue of a camelsaurus (the King was quite fond of dinosaurs) and Mr. Elmsberry’s fish tank which contained, among other rare species, a leafy dragon eel. Also in the parade was a giant sack of pennies that the elder Mrs. Fungalstinn had spent her life collecting, a model of a volcano used at birthday parties, a giant egg whisk made of solid metal that commemorated the mention of New Dunsley Clackyshire on the Sea in book nine of the poggly woggly adventure series, the local cat that ate all of the rats, and finally the De Confetti family’s collection of bricks.

The Parade of Heavy Things was meant to start at the edge of town, circle The Raincoat Keeper, and then proceed to the other edge of town. But as the Parade of Heavy Things began circling The Raincoat Keeper a terrible thing happened.

The building shuddered, sighed, and then all of the walls and the roof collapsed into a pile of dust as if the Raincoat Keeper had never existed. Raincoats began to blow around New Dunsley Clackyshire. People were seen walking down the street with red children’s raincoats stuck in their hair, yellow crossing guard’s raincoats plastered to briefcases, and blue fishermen’s raincoats caught on the bottom of shoes.

As New Dunsley Clackyshire is in a valley, the raincoats blew in a circle around the town. Pretty soon everything was covered with raincoats – the sidewalks, the houses, even the camelsaurus. If one saw it one would imagine it was just a giant coat rack and not an esteemed dinosaur. The people of the village picked up the rain coats but had no where to put them and, in any case, more blew in to take the place of the ones people picked up.

Around this time a Croco-diamond came to the village. He seemed out of breath as he arrived. One might have thought he had been running though Croco-diamonds aren’t normally known to hurry. He was dragging behind him what appeared to be a large corked bottle. Something grey and cloudlike was swirling around inside it.

“Greetings good people of the town of New Dunsley Clackyshire on the Sea! What a fine town you seem to have! I am amused by your decorations. Perhaps it is Raincoat Day? I do love holidays. Especially ones that last a week. Why just the other day I was telling King Ramsley of North Cuffsley…”

Just then a breeze picked up and blew a pink polka dot raincoat onto the Croco-diamond’s head.

“Well, I see I have now joined in your raincoat celebration. I thank you, the good people of New Dunsley Clackyshire on the…”

More raincoats landed on the Croco-diamond, sticking to the jewels on his spine and tangling around his finely manicured nails.

it worked!

Tightened this screw and the pulley stabilized. What's weird is it was completely loose. Not sure how it loosened itself up. Maybe I should put some loctite on it...

I was told by someone who knows a fuck lot about machines and shit not to touch this screw for any reason. Well, I did. And used a tree branch under the motor as leverage (it's hard to adjust the tension on the belt alone because you have to hold the motor with one arm and bend around and turn the screw with the other).
Every once in a while I can hear a chirp from the belt but otherwise it's working. Think the belt may be slightly damaged from when the wheel loosened up. Fuck it. I'll replace it in the fall. In the mean time if anyone wants to come over to my house and turn the swamp cooler on and off for me so I don't have to keep climbing up and down from the roof feel free. I'd like to make a few more tweaks to the belt tension.

youtube swamp cooler porn

This morning in a VERY boring meeting I think I figured out how to fix my swamp cooler by watching some youtube vids on swamp coolers.

I think what happened is over the years the upper pulley was adjusted because the belt was stretching out over time and there was too much tension on the belt. So I fixed that. But I realized fixing that that the lower pulley was sliding randomly around. So I did some further research and found something about a set screw. I think I've found the set screw.

Hoping that's a set screw...
So after this boring meeting is over I'm going to go back up on the roof and see if I can somehow tighten that screw and get my swamp cooler working again. If not no one can come out until 11 July. Thankfully it hasn't been very hot but that could change at any minute. And I'm having guests...

colorado here we come

I may not be able to fix my swamp cooler but I was finally able to fix my upstairs shower head which was leaking. I did that because I'm going to have visitors! My Aunt Sarah and her husband are coming into town in July. She's a jock and just had knee replacement surgery (overall she's happy with the reduction of pain but not as excited about not being able to play volleyball and basketball anymore).

My Aunt Sarah wrote:

I am finally taking a vaca after 2 years of hard work. We are coming to your state, despite the fires, and will be near to Denver. We were wondering if you would like a visit from the clan ( Dave and me)? Our very good friends have a place in Walsenburg that DIDN'T burn-up, thank goodness, and we will spend most of our time thereabouts. We had planned on camping on their mountain property, that DID burn-up, but those plans have ,naturally ,changed. We are pretty flexible, if you want us. We leave Louisville on Friday, July 5 and don't return until the 15th. We could drive in to take you to dinner, or we could just stay for a day- whatever. Don't feel obligated- we just thought we'd like to see you, and the now famous kitchen renovation. We could talk string -theory, knee replacements, park development, Mars rover, the role of exercise in fighting addiction, etc.. Just let us know what you think.

Yes, a visit sounds great! I just looked and Walsenburg is about 2 1/2 hours from Denver so if you guys want to stay here I have a guest bedroom. My cooking skills haven't really improved but there's plenty of places to eat within walking distance of my house.

I'm not traveling much these days and will be around for the time you're here so any time you guys want to come is great! If you're interested I live about 3 miles from the Denver Botanic Gardens which are fantastic if you like that sort of thing...

(I haven't been to the Denver Botanic Gardens with company since before christmas...I love the DBG so I try to get people to go with me when I have them captive - I mean, when they're visiting me)

Oh goodie! We will be consulting with our friends to see how they want to arrange things. I think we should head straight into Denver, then go to Walsenburg, but Dave thinks breaking things up in the middle of our stay with our buddies would be a smarter way to go...we don't want our friends to get too sick of us. We could make you sick instead!
I am approaching this whole trip with wide open arms and no expectations, just needing a change of scenery and getting out of Dodge...  I haven't been to Denver in 29 years! Some "gentle" mountain hiking would be welcome- NOT like you and your Dad are famous for. I would enjoy the Botantical Gardens or any other site-seeing that is within walking distance. After 22 hours in a car, I will be ready for walking, biking, swimming, hiking etc.

Psyched! Wonder if I can talk them into doing some climbing...

dear swamp cooler: you are an asshole

I keep doing things, like rubberizing the pan, to keep my swamp cooler from breaking. But the fucking thing keeps breaking.

There's no way it can leak anymore, like it used to, because the pan has 5 coats of rubber on it. I just replaced the belt and the water pump (in a thunder storm, which, in retrospect, wasn't very smart), so those can't break. The main pulley was welded and reinforced so it should last forever.

I think the problem is the belt replacement. The belt is obviously tighter than the old one (which was barely holding together). At first everything was fine and then last Monday I woke up at 5 am because my swamp cooler sounded like a 747 taking off on my roof. Someone with proper tools and a knack with engines came over and did some work on it and it was fine. Then I turned it off on Thursday. Friday it was fine but this morning it was making a racket again. I tried tightening shit and lubricating shit but nothing is working.

the asshole

So now I've decided to just hire someone to fix it. I give up. I think the pulley is out of alignment and it wasn't obvious with the old belt because the old belt was so loose. I have no idea how to realign a pulley. Of course, I've called a couple of places this morning and apparently a lot of people have broken swamp coolers and ACs. Hopefully someone will call me back before the summer is over.

Every time I think I'm done with projects in my house something always seems to break...

highs and lows

A friend of mine has a daughter who has just released her first album, called "highs and lows":

"As a Dad it is wonderful to watch one of her dreams come true.  I recall her at home when her legs wouldn't touch the floor sitting on the piano bench and picking out melodies with one finger on the piano.  She's written 100s of songs over the years as this gift in her has grown.   Great to see it result in something of this quality that can be shared with others."

Nice to see kids doing something besides shooting up schools or bombing shit. Check it out!

chicago

I flew to Chicago on Tuesday to pretend to be a sales person so I could go to a conference and see Soldier Field.

I like going to baseball stadiums when no one is there.
They were doing a tour of Soldier Field but that sounded boring so instead I met my friend Trina (the creepy foot doctor) for drinks.

I'm hunching weirdly because I'm almost 6 feet tall in my sandals.
Trin's husband Todd is going to make me biscuits and gravy next time I come here since this was a very short trip.

climbing the catslab and the floating shit show

On Saturday I went climbing in clear creek canyon. Fun!

I'll wake up early for overhangs.

Point where I realized I was off route and had to move left a few feet. Fuuuuuck.
Then later in the day the fun hog and I went out on his boat, which, it turns out, was tied up to two other boats, forming what the fun hog called "the floating shit show".

Drunk cops + dog + "there's fucking kids on the boat???" + teenage girl in a bikini + other boats with girls in bikinis sailing by + boat drinks (3 olives grape vodka and diet soda - too disgusting to drink unless you're the popo) + cooler filled with beers and tzatziki + T'Pain "I'm on a boat" = the floating shit show

annie oakley

This weekend the "fun hog" (so called because no matter how much fun you're having, he's having more fun - some how he's made a career out of always being on vacation somewhere cool doing something fun like a hut trip or dirt biking in Moab). We were checking out a new mountain biking / dirt biking / climbing area.

The climbing area was closed. The mountain biking was epic, but fun. Even more fun was being on relatively deserted BLM land where we could shoot guns.

It looks like an elephant gun, but it's not. I'm just small compared to the gun.

I accidentally screwed up the scope by knocking it around with my armpit while I was trying to cock the gun so we took it off.

I managed to hit this bottle cap from 30 feet away first try. Then I drank more beer and couldn't hit small stuff anymore. I don't think it was the beer. It's my bad jew eyes.
Text to my dad:
"Drinking beer and shooting shit. Target practice with dinner plates!"

His reply:
"Beats having to clean up the plates!"

Safety and efficiency are my motto.

more mazatlan pics

I will be writing more about my trip, but in the mean time I've had some requests for pictures...

Crashing through the white water to get out to the break at Olas Altos...

Most of the time you don't want to be surfing the white water.

Gross. These jelly fish showed up in the afternoon almost every day. Miraculously I did not get stung.

Part of the historic district of Mazatlan, as seen from Olas Altos.

This is sort of what it looks like while paddling out to the surf break. But scarier. I almost drowned just trying to get out to the break.

This isn't even the big gun. Imagine me trying to get this thing out through the break.

"Hey, I think there's someone with a hat who might want to buy another hat!"

P discovered my kryptonite. I am a total neat freak but for some reason I always ended up a sandy mess. No matter how often I rinsed my feet or shook out my clothes I ended up covered in sand. The nickname for the Mazaloans is "pata salada", sandy feet. So I guess I must have some Mazaloan blood in me somewhere...

I LOVE mangos!!!! These awesome mangos were carved out by the mango man at Playa Bruia and they're covered in chili sauce. SO GOOD.

Mangos post consumption. Those cookies are from the Playa Bruia restaurant. They were presented to P and I with a flourish which implied they were tasty. They actually tasted like sand and sugar. I'm imagining the mango pit on the left saying to the mango pit to the right "hm, I wonder where these cookies came from." Kind of like my room service art.

Best happy hour is on top of the best western. Beautiful balcony, amazing view, but the elevator doesn't go up there so it's not overly crowded.

Cotton candy, yum!!!! And some idiotic german kids. The girl in the pic above kept striking poses on the beach. Did she think she looked cool?

My birthday dinner was here. The inside of this restaurant is a huge courtyard. Very beautiful. The food was fucking great.

Mexican divorce? This guy is burying his wife in the sand.

My mom was asking about my pink hat. I got it at REI and it's for children 4 - 7 years old. I have a really small head.

Stone Island

The first day in Mazatlan P and I went to Stone Island to watch a surfing comp. We were accompanied by Willy, a local Mazatloan. Since it's late in the season, and beach conditions were not conducive to swimming, there were few tourists. We only saw some from the shore, on a booze cruise boat.

Beach at Stone Island. It was the calmest beach, but not exactly conducive to wading and swimming.
None of the restaurants were open so Willy found a guy with a cooler and bought beer. We had pacificos, which have more alcohol in them there than in the US. They also taste better.

As we were walking to a restaurant to have some ceviche I hesitated by the side of the road and asked Willy "Is it legal for us to walk down the road drinking beer?"

He gave me a quizzical look, then said "Franki, everything is legal in Mexico".

Isla de Chivos
On Wednesday, my birthday, P and I went to Stone Island for my second day of surfing. I managed to get up on the board and ride a wave in which was awesome. As I was exiting the water a woman stopped me and congratulated me on my ride. And an older Mexican grandmother gave me a nod and a huge smile. Pretty cool.

epic surfing - olas altos

Note to self: surfing during hurricane conditions is challenging

More updates on my vacation to follow. Here's a vid of the surfing conditions at Olas Altos:
